The Problem

Farm managers keep their business data scattered across multiple digital and physical sources. This slowed down their workflow and made mandatory audits take up a significant amount of their time. They wanted a place to house everything to speed things up.

My Role

My responsibilities entailed interviewing SMEs and users to identify core issues, designing wireframes and prototypes to test solutions, finalizing UI designs, and partnering with product and engineering teams to ensure a successful launch for many new features.

Interviews

Discussions with users and SMEs about the needs they have, the problems they're trying to solve, the pros and cons of the current applications they use, and potential opportunities to make something better. Distinguishing between answers from various regions and different farm types (orchards, row crops, etc.) to identify similarities, opportunities for alignment, and important distinctions that needed to be accounted for.

Feature Discovery

Distill research material and identify the best opportunities to meet the users needs. These included tracking REI/PHI, Soil Moisture, Soil Nutrition, Insect Presence & Phenology, Disease Presence & Predictions, Overall Farm Health, Weather, Expense Tracking, Budgeting, Regulatory Compliance, Yield, and more.

Running virtual and in-person workshops with team members from multiple teams including business, product, design, and engineering.

  1. UX DESIGN

Wireframes and prototypes were created to verify content requirements with SMEs and test functionality with users.

  1. UI DESIGN

Design System

Built on the foundation of Angular Material, the CropSights Design System utilized variables and components to accelerate build time and control consistency. I created detailed usage and layout guidelines to establish universal understanding and agreement.

High Fidelity Designs

The user interface and interaction designs ensure the product is intuitive and efficient while also making it aesthetically pleasing.

  1. PRODUCT LAUNCH

Storygrooming Support

Product Managers were looped in from the Ideation process onward. I worked closely with them to guarantee the user stories were aligned with all discovered user needs.

Development Support

Design files were set up for developers to have direct access to reusable components, properties, styles, and code snippets. A Design System was created for consistency and FAQs. All other needs were directly handled by me in a timely manner to remove blockers.

Learnings

I would change the way I tracked research. By using more specialized tools I could speed up the process and remove more of my bias from highlighted findings.

Successes

I turned complex audit documentation and requirements into a simple step-by-step interface that improved audit times by over 30%.

I brought the design perspective to collaborative efforts across business, marketing, product, and engineering teams.

I balanced designing multiple features at various project phases with different product/engineering teams while consistently meeting deadlines.
